Kung Fu, also spelled Gung Fu, is a generic term for martial arts originating in China. It’s basic translation meaning “a skill which is achieved through hard work”.

We have a good mixture of classes.  For beginners and junior grades (White to Blue Sash) there is the Monday 19:30 class.  For Senior Grades (Green Sash and above) we have the class at 20:00 on Wednesdays.

We also offer a  morning class at 11:00 on Fridays and a Saturday class at 12;30, as well as a class in Ledbury at 19:00 on Tuesdays. All these classes are open to all grades where our senior grades are always happy to help out beginners.

Our Junior Grade Adult Kung Fu Grades (White to Orange Sash)classes start at 19:30 on Mondays and we also run a class at 12:30 on Saturdays as well as a class in Ledbury at 19:00 on Tuesdays, both of which are open to all grades.

Our Senior Grades (Green Sash and above)  Adult Kung Fu classes start 20:30 on Wednesdays and we also run a class at 12:30 on Saturdays as well as a class in Ledbury at 19:00 on Tuesdays, both of which are open to all grades.

Kung Fu is known for being one of the most effective and devastating methods of self-preservation known to man but most importantly it is a way of thinking and a code to live by. Kung Fu requires of the practitioner a strict code of physical and mental discipline. It is only as a whole concept that kung Fu can be discussed, and this entails more than just fighting. The philosophy behind Kung Fu is a combination of Taoism and Buddhism. The primary aim was to follow the Tao, the way of Nature. Only thus could the practitioner be in harmony with the Universe, and himself.

The Kung Fu that we teach is a hybrid system mainly consisting of Southern Chinese styles. Matt has studied and trained in Lau Gar Kung Fu for a good duration of his martial art journey and has also had a love for Wing Chun Kung Fu. Both styles utilises close quarter fighting and low kicks which are more realistic in a street fighting scenario. Matt doesn’t like the thought of styles being restricted to a particular way and believes all have weak and strong points, all depending on what the student wants to achieve. Our Kung Fu system combines hard and soft style techniques to create a comprehensive martial art. Our aim is to develop the whole martial artist, by training the body, the mind and the spirit, In addition to physical body conditioning and the teaching of forms and applications, meditation is an integral part of the training.

Matt emphasises individual learning and students depending on their own life style will progress at their own pace. Students who study Kung fu, quickly realise that their training is not limited to class time. It is when the student develops the ability to take the lessons they learned inside the Kwoon (training hall), and begins to apply it to their everyday life, that the transformation into a true martial artist really begins.

Kung Fu is classed as a traditional martial art whereas kickboxing and the likes of mma would be classed as a modern art. This means that Kung Fu has stood the test of time and has been around for quite a few years now, probably hundreds of years. Nobody really knows the exact time it started even though there are many different accounts, however this just makes learning Kung Fu even more fascinating.

There are so many reasons why people start their Kung Fu journey as there are so many different benefits that can come from it, from just wanting to get fit to wanting to enhance your own spirituality. It is very common for new students to start training to get fit and stronger and before long they are hooked because they are learning so much about themselves.

There are many different styles and systems of Kung Fu and for the beginner it can be confusing especially when turning up for their first class and not knowing what to expect. The system that we teach at our school is formed from Lau Gar Kung Fu and is a Southern Chinese style. It is very different from a lot of the Kung Fu you may have watched in the movies with high flying kicks and somersaults. Our system can be easily adapted for self defence as it relies a lot on close quarter techniques.

Our Classes are taught in a very informal and friendly way as everyone is wanting something different from their training. Our ethos has always been that martial arts should be readily available for all types of people and not just the ones that can kick at head height and want to compete in competitions. We have many students training in our traditional Kung Fu that range from 14 to 70 years old.
