I began my training in martial arts in 1979 when I was eight years old. My first discipline was Judo where I trained in old matted out tinned sheds; I can still smell the stench of sweat when you first entered. This was before Hereford’s Leisure Centre was even built. I studied Judo for three years but it wasn’t long after I got hooked on Bruce Lee in the TV programme The Green Hornet that I wanted to try the kicking arts.
Matt Hudd Martial Arts CIC, formally known as Dragon Fitness Academy was formed in 2011 when Matt Hudd decided to quit his full-time job to become a full-time martial art instructor. Tired of politics in the martial arts and seeing clubs with big egos with statements like “Keep It Real” and “Have You Got The Bottle?” Matt wanted to create something different.
Matt Hudd Martial Arts is proud to have been awarded Sport England's Clubmark, which is awarded to clubs by their NGB (National Governing Body) when the club is able to demonstrate that it meets the NGBs criteria as to the activity programme; equity; knowing your club and its community and club management. Clubmark is an acknowledgement that we take these issues seriously and that we are striving to provide a high quality and welcoming environment for young participants in the sport.
